The Nation's Washington Correspondent, John Nichols, flags up here Susan Rice's complicity in spreading the Iraq 'weapons of mass destruction' myth. She did so following then Secretary of State Colin Powell's presentation of 'evidence' at a plenary session of the United Nations Security Council in 2003.
Rice is said to have stated, in a radio interview, that Powell had 'proved that Iraq has these weapons and is hiding them', and 'I don't think many informed people doubted that'.
Incidentally, Ari Berman, also based at the Nation, launched a defense of Rice in response to Nichols' article. Berman argues that her entire portfolio should be examined before she is dismissed and that her nomination illustrates Obama is 'serious about putting diplomacy and multilateralism back at the center of US foreign policy and focusing on those areas of the world, like Africa, that the Bush Administration has badly ignored. It's a good sign, not a bad one.'
