New Roediger Book on Race in the US and Obama

David R. Roediger, author of The Wages of Whiteness, has a new book out. Published by Verso, it’s titled How Race Survived US History: From Settlement and Slavery to the Obama Phenomenon. Here’s the blurb from the flyer advertising the book.
Far from being the ‘post-racial’ society advocated by Obama, racial identity continues to shape American political debates, from the border with Mexico to the podium in Philadelphia.

In his revolutionary How Race Survived U.S. History, David Roediger reconstructs the origins of race in America, showing how the doctrine of racial supremacy survived the declaration of independence, the growth of capitalism, mass immigration and modern liberalism. Confronting the future of race in a country undergoing major cultural and political changes, Roediger finally specifies what would be required for the construction of a truly post-racial world.
